When you are out of town and someone asks you where you live, you say “I’m from Kansas City” … one of three things will happen. They give you the “I have never been to Kansas City stare”, or they ask you Kansas City, Missouri or Kansas City, Kansas… (now, you are somewhat impressed because they actually know the difference) or they ask you if you know someone from Lee’s Summitt or Overland Park or Northtown.
As a dentist downtown for the last 27 years, I have seen the community around me transform from urban breakdown to complete transformation. As a local dentist and a lifelong Kansas Citian, being a local dentist downtown was important to me because I served a community of business people and residents that needed a friendly dentist nearby. A dental office in downtown Kansas City is hard to find because most of the dentists vacated the area in the 1970’s and 1980’s for greener pastures. Actually, downtown Kansas City by the early 1990’s was being vacated in mass by businesses and its emptiness was apparent to the remaining businesses. The empty streets, lack of traffic, closed up or boarded buildings…. it was sad. And needless to say, our dental office struggled. We struggled, but we did not give up. People would ask me … “why don’t you leave your dental office downtown? Nobody needs a local dentist there.” My answer was always the same, “I believe in Kansas City. I love Kansas City. I love Downtown.”
Over the last 2 decades, Downtown Kansas City has revitalized and recreated itself to become a thriving business district, entertainment hot spot and home for thousands of its citizens. Essential services like dental and medical services, business services and banking, grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, and entertainment have made Downtown Kansas City a desired living location for many young professionals. Kansas City reinvented itself with the Power and Light District, Sprint Center, City Market, and Kaufmann Center. The businesses and people have all returned … and then some. Downtown is growing, breathing, thriving, bustling… and it’s EXCITING!
Our dental office in Downtown Kansas City has also grown. When the businesses and people returned, our practice grew. We moved from the old professional building at 1103 Grand Avenue to our new office in the Commerce Bank Arcade at 1000 Walnut. We set up a brand new office that was designed for our downtown community. Our focus was on convenience and friendly care.
As a dentist downtown, we have two categories of patients. The first category of patients is people who do not live downtown. They commute into downtown from one of the two-dozen suburbs surrounding the downtown area. This commute can be from 15 minutes to an hour long depending on traffic conditions. The second category of patients we see at our downtown dental office are people who work and live in the downtown area. Our office is within walking distance to their work and home and we are their local dentist.
So, let’s say you are in the first category. You work downtown and live in Lee’s Summit, for example. You break a tooth at work while you’re eating your sandwich at lunch and you are in dental pain. What do you do? You could call your suburban dentist in Lee’s Summit. But, you are an hour away! Do you miss a half day of work? NO. You Google Dentist Near Me or local dentist and you find that our office takes same-day emergency appointments. You call our dental office, come in, get fixed up, and go back to work. How easy is that? Or let’s say you need to get a regular checkup and a tooth-colored filling, but you are swamped at work. Now that you found the best dentist in the area, you know that you can make an appointment with our friendly dental office and be treated at a time that is convenient for you. We even take lunch-hour appointments that get you in and back on your way before the afternoon work load hits! Do you have a grumpy boss who won’t let you out at all…..except lunch? Call our office and tell us what your situation is and we will make sure we get you taken care of and your boss will never be the wiser. Why miss a half day of work? Or take vacation time, when you should use your vacation time for what it is really meant for….. your vacation! As a local dentist downtown, you can work in the city, receive your dental care in the city, and live in the suburbs without complication. It is super convenient for you and saves you tons of time!
Truth is Kansas City is really spread out these days. Kansas City is a medium sized big city with a small town feel. It has an urban core with all the amenities of a big city, but is spread out into multiple suburban areas.
So simplify your life! If you live downtown, our local dentist office is just down the block. If you commute from the “Burbs”, then join us in your quest for better dental health with the convenience that our downtown dental office provides.
