Step 1: A Dental Exam

The dental hygienist or dentist uses a small mirror to check around your teeth and gums for any signs of gingivitis (inflamed gums) or other potential concerns. If any major areas of decay or inflammation are detected the doctor will be notified before completing their exam. In some cases, it may not be in your best interest to proceed with the cleaning.

A dental tool called a scaler, will be used to get rid of plaque and tartar around the gum line, as well as in between the teeth. You’ll hear scraping, but this is normal! The more tartar there is in your mouth, the more time is needed to scrape a particular spot.
